In this day and age scams run rampant with not only HVAC contractors, but any contractor. As with any purchase or service, you should always go by the motto “buyer beware” and check the company out first before jumping into a contract or payment. There are many reputable HVAC companies out there. But, because of the scams, we have compiled a list of three things to watch for when you hire a company for any work on your home. Beware of the following:
- “You only need some more refrigerant in your air conditioner.” FALSE! Freon running through your air conditioning system does not run out. It is not like your car where you need to add more and then everything is fine. An air conditioning system that is low on refrigerant indicates that there is a leak somewhere that needs patched. For a contractor to say that you only need refrigerant means that he knows that the problem will not be fixed and they will continue to come out to add Freon to the system, charging you every time.
- They claim that they work for a larger, reputable company to get in your home to sell you their service. Usually they accomplish this by saying that the “company they work for” is offering Free inspections. Make sure that the contractor has a company van, company shirt, and credentials when he comes to your home. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reported that in 2014, imposter scams such as this were the number 2 consumer complaint.
- “I have a used part that you need in my truck”. First, you need to ask yourself why they would have the specific used part in their truck. It was probably a used part from another job. Any legitimate HVAC contractor would not place a used part into your air conditioning system. Doing this compromises the entire system by putting additional stress on the other components of the unit.
Use common sense when hiring any contractor. Be inquisitive. Ask about their history, policies, trade organizations they belong to, and certifications.
