Air conditioning units are a major expense when it comes time to replace. We know you want to get the most for your money and that means taking care of your unit so that it is able to stick with you and last for the duration of the expected lifespan. Older units were expected to last about 10 years and newer models come in at a life expectancy of approximately 15 years.
Keeping your air conditioning healthy and functioning properly takes very little effort on your part and can be done efficiently. Below we share some simple ways to extend the lifespan of your central air conditioner.
ALTERNATIVE COOLING METHODS: It may seem obvious, but the less that you use your air conditioning, the longer it will last. We know this is not always practical advice, especially here in Florida. But there are times of the year when the AC can be flipped off and fans can be used as your primary cooling tool. Thick darker color window covers also reduce the heat in the home and save on energy.
PLACE YOUR AC IN THE SHADE: If your unit is outside in direct sunlight, it has to work even harder to cool your home as it has to cool itself first. One way around this is to keep the AC unit in the shade. Plant small trees at a distance close enough to give the AC some cover without smothering the unit with falling leaves.
FREE OF DEBRIS: Keep the external AC unit clear of leaves, lawn clippings, and other debris. The condenser is extremely susceptible to problems due to the environment its placed in. While designed to be weather-resistant, they are still easily damaged. Nearby trees are good for condensers because they provide shade, it’s still a good idea to check the condenser regularly to make sure nothing has fallen in and is messing up the mechanics.
CHANGE YOUR FILTER: Change your AC filters as recommended. Most manufacturers recommend that you change your AC filters every 30-60 days. This can vary depending on your location, how often you use your air conditioner and the overall quality of the air in your area. Changing the filter regularly can add years to the life of your air conditioner.
REGULAR MAINTENANCE: While you can clean your AC yourself, unless you really know what you are doing you may do more harm than good. Hosing the outside unit down and brushing away debris and dirt with a broom is a great start but regular professional scheduled maintenance (which keeps your warranty valid) can be a lifesaver.
