Viruses reproduce more easily in cold environments. Keeping your A/C set a little warmer than usual will help your immunity and keep your resistance strong. Studies have linked overly cold air conditioning use to increased sickness in office workers and more frequent visits to ear, nose and throat specialists. According to WebMD, “The most common cold-causing viruses survive better when humidity is low — the colder months of the year. Cold weather also may make the inside lining of your nose drier and more vulnerable to viral infection.”
The average commercial air filter is not able to remove all the contaminants floating in your home’s air. If your air filter has tightly knit fibers, they could restrict airflow, which is why it is not recommended to choose an air filter that is overly powerful. Air purifiers may be a better way to go.
A quality air purifier can pair up with your HVAC system to charge particles moving through the unit. They are attracted to a surface which holds an opposite charge. They will then cling to it staying inside of the purifier instead of moving through the air and being inhaled.
An ultraviolet light system can be installed within your air conditioning and heating system to kill germs as they pass through. Viruses and bacteria are killed and sterilized instantly as they pass UV light, which makes them harmless to breathe in.
On the flip side, turning on the heater too high can have a detrimental effect as well, drying out mucus membranes. Dry mucus membranes make it more difficult for your body to fight off infection. Despite the fact that we live in Florida using a humidifier in your home during cold and flu season can still help decrease the chances of infection. Humidifiers add moisture to the air.
