Hurricane in Southwest Florida

That time of year in Florida is upon us…Hurricane season. Every year we hold our breath and wait for the next big hurricane. Fortunately, we haven’t had any major storms for years. But, it is only a matter of time until the next hurricane comes along. According to meteorologists, there is a higher likelihood of a hurricane this year due to the El Nino’s effect this past winter.

You need to be prepared to protect yourself and your belongings. Since our business is air conditioning, we have some tips on what to do to protect your air conditioner during a hurricane or strong summer storm. By taking steps ahead of time, you are less likely to have to replace your air conditioning system after the storm.

  • Turn off your air conditioner before the storm hits. The numerous power surges during a large storm can potentially damage the unit. Before you turn it off, turn the temperature down to try and cool the air inside of your home so you don’t have to go without cool air for too long.
  • Securely cover outdoor air conditioners with a large tarp. You can also use plywood to protect the unit from debris that can fly through the air and can cause major damage. Use hurricane straps to hold the unit down from high winds.
  • Since we are in humid, hot Florida, you will be eager to turn the unit back on after the storm. Use the mentality of “safety first” after the hurricane. Inspect the air conditioner for damage before attempting to use it. Are any lines torn? Are there dents from tree limbs and flying debris? Are the vents clear of debris? Is it submerged in water? If, after visual inspection, you turn it on and you notice signs of smoke or anything out of the norm, you will need a professional to service the unit.
