In order for the air conditioner to cool the house, it has to blow cold air. So, if the house is not cooling properly, or even if it does feel comfortable, but you notice that the air coming from the air conditioner vents is not cool, there may be a problem. Although this could be a sign of a serious problem, there are other things that could cause the air coming from the vents not to be cool. Here are a few things to check.

Fan Setting

Nearly all thermostats are equipped with a switch to change the fan setting in the air handler, usually labeled “auto” and “on.” “Auto” means the fan will blow only when the compressor is running, but “on” means the fan will blow all the time. If the air coming from your vents is sometimes cool but other times not, check the fan setting on your thermostat. If it’s set to “on,” this means that when the fan blows but the compressor is not running, the air will not be cool during those times. Additionally, make sure the thermostat is set to “Cool,” rather than “off” or “heat” so that the air conditioner is set to cool the air.

Filter

If the filter gets too dirty, it can weaken the air flow and affect the compressor’s ability to cool the air. Sometimes the system can freeze up, which also affects the air flow, including sometimes blocking it entirely. Be sure to change the filter to a new, clean one, and see if that helps fix the problem.

AC Unit

Check the air compressor outside the house. If grass or weeds or other debris is covering it, it will be less efficient and won’t sufficiently cool the air. Trim foliage away from the unit to keep air flow through it clear. Additionally, check to be sure the fan in the compressor is running, and call a service technician to check the levels of refrigerant in the system. Any one of these things can cause the air not to cool sufficiently.

It’s important to pay attention to how your air conditioning system is behaving. If it is not blowing cool air, then it is not working properly. For simple fixes like thermostat settings and changing filters, you can probably do it yourself. But more serious problems might need to attention of a service technician before they develop into an even more serious problem that might mean replacing the entire unit.
