air conditioning Fort Myers

While regular maintenance to your air conditioning system can help you get the most of its use and perhaps even extend its lifetime by many years, no air conditioning unit will last forever. When you consider all the technological advancements happening consistently in the cooling and heating industry, you most likely wouldn’t want your air conditioning unit to last forever either, as these advancements typically result in systems that are more energy-efficient and cost-effective to run. This does not, however, mean that you need to run out and buy an expensive new cooling system every year or even every few years. But how does one know when it is the right time to invest in a new air conditioner?

  • Your current system is more than ten years old. While the desired lifespan of every central air conditioner is around fifteen years, not every air conditioner will last this long, especially older units. If your unit is already over ten years old, you may end up spending more money to try and make it last another five years with repairs than you would spend on a replacement.
  • Your energy bill continues to increase, even when you decrease your use. You may have already noticed a steady increase in your energy bill, even if you’ve already taken action to reduce your air conditioning use. If this is the case, your system may simply not be running as efficiently as it once did, a problem which, unfortunately, can grow steadily worse.
  • There are noticeable differences in temperature across different rooms in your home. You may have noticed that some rooms in your home take longer to get cool than others, or they never seem to cool down at all. While this can be a sign of bad insulation, it can also be a sign that your current system is starting to go.
  • It seems to take longer and longer to cool your home after turning on your system. If your system is taking hours to do what it once did in minutes, then an upgrade may be in order. This can be especially true in Southwest Florida, where extreme temperatures can make it vitally important to be able to cool down quickly.
  • Annual and semi-annual maintenance is no longer enough. For most air conditioners, annual service is enough, though semi-annual service is always better. But if you find yourself calling in for repairs or tune-ups more often than every six months, then upgrading your system may be the best option possible for saving yourself money down the line.
  • The cost of repairs outweighs the cost of a new system. What this means will be different for everyone, but typically, if repairs will cost you around half or more of what a system upgrade would cost you, then an upgrade is probably your best option. Expensive repairs are often followed by additional expensive repairs, and sometimes it is better to nip the problem in the bud before it turns into a larger, and much more expensive, problem later on.
