Summer heat in Southwest Florida is unlike any other. The high temperatures mixed with humidity can create dangerous conditions for everyone, but especially the elderly. There are some reasons why older adults, ages 65 and over, are more susceptible to heat-related death.
- Older adults are not able to adjust to temperature changes as a younger person’s body would. Their bodies do not sweat as much which is the body’s way of cooling down. Thus, it is a lot more difficult to regulate their temperature and can become very dangerous in high temperatures.
- Prescription medications can affect the way their body handles high temperatures.
- The elderly is prone to more chronic physical problems than the younger population. High blood pressure, heart conditions, diabetes are some examples of conditions that the heat can affect.
Older Floridians have to be cautious during the summer season. The average temperature in Naples, FL, for example, is 93°F in July. That is an average, meaning that some days can break the 100°F mark. This does not include the heat index, which takes into account humidity. If you are a senior or know an elderly person, it is imperative that they take precautions when it comes to the summer heat here in Florida. Here are some tips on reducing your risk of becoming seriously ill during extreme heat:
- Stay hydrated! This is of utmost importance since dehydration can occur quickly in high temperatures. If you are thirsty, your body is telling you that it is in need of water. Do not ignore this warning sign.
- Keep your body cool. Stay in an air conditioned home or office as much as possible. Maintaining a cool body temperature will ward off dehydration and avoid heat illnesses.
- Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day, between 10 am – 2:00 pm. Save your outdoor activities, such as gardening or exercise, for early morning or early evening.
- Avoid a sunburn since it affects your body’s process of cooling down. Wear a high SPF sunscreen, cover your body in loose fitting clothing, and wear a wide brimmed hat to avoid a sunburn.
By taking these precautions, you and your elderly loved ones can stay safe during periods of high temperatures.
