It is generally recommended that you change your air-conditioner unit’s filter whenever it gets dirty. Different filters have different life spans, and every house will have a different environment for filtering. For example, people with pets may need to change the filter more often due to the accumulation of pet fur. However, whatever schedule is right for you, it’s very important that you change your A/C filter regularly.
Especially in Florida, you want your system to run as efficiently as possible. When the filter gets clogged with dust and dirt, the A/C unit has to work much harder to deliver cooled air throughout the home. This takes extra energy, which increases the cost of running the air conditioning overall. Having the A/C unit work harder can also reduce its lifespan by causing it to overheat, which will wear out components much faster. A/C units are designed to work under particular conditions, including a relatively free passage of air, so making sure the filter is replaced whenever it gets dirty will keep the A/C working within those parameters.
More than efficient running, however, keeping the filter clean lets the filter itself work more efficiently. Airborne pollutants and allergens are very common, and the filter’s purpose is to remove these things from the air you’re breathing and save the negative effects on your immune system. Pet dander and pollen can enter the home even if you have no pets or indoor plants, or pollen-producing plants in your yard. The air filter catches these allergens and keeps them from getting into the ducts and being spread throughout the home.
Check your air filter every few weeks, depending on the recommendation for your filter type and system, as well as your environment and whether you have pets. Keep the filter clean by replacing it whenever necessary, and be sure to schedule appropriate maintenance for your air conditioning system.
