Here in Southwest Florida, we run our air conditioners nearly all year long. This adds up when it comes to power usage and billing. In fact, due to our heated climate AC use will often make up one of the largest energy usage charges in your entire home.
If you are looking for ways to cut back on your bill, there needs to be a way to cut back on air conditioner energy usage.
Here are a few ideas to help trim your budget.
Sometimes we have a number stuck in our minds as to just how cool we need our space to be. Try bumping that number up a digit or two. The key to remaining comfortable is more about humidity control than the exact reading. Experiment with the thermostat. You may be surprised at the real number you are comfortable with.
Maintenance is key. Dirty ducts and filters, malfunctioning compressors, or other system issues can make your unit run at a lower output. This will cause electric bills to rise, sometimes drastically. If your AC unit is over 10 years old it may be time to consider replacement. Newer units have far better energy ratings and though it may cost you upfront, in the long run, the savings can be well worth the investment. Once installed maintain regularly to keep it running smoothly and extend longevity.
Turn on the Interior fans. Fans use much less energy than the air conditioner, so turning on ceiling fans helps circulate cool air around the house can be a reduction in costs while still maintaining a comfortable environment.
Open the window and turn off the unit all together! Morning and evening hours this time of year are brisk and lovely. The perfect time to air out the home and freshen things up!
