You likely haven’t given your air conditioning much thought other than if it goes on the fritz. We thought we would entertain you with a few key fun facts you likely never heard before.
Did you know?
- 38% of American homes have central air, 36% have window units and just 12% have no air conditioning at all.
- The term tonnage in cooling refers to how ACs originally cooled by using blocks of ice. 1 ton equaled a one ton block of ice.
- Initially employers did not want to install air conditioning in work environments for fear it might make their employees less productive. The opposite was found to be true and AC quickly became standard in workplaces during the mid 1950’s.
- Fans, the fore father of air conditioning, do little to cool the air, they produce a “wind chill effect” which lowers body temperature.
- Air conditioners do more than just cool air, they remove humidity.
- The first AC unit was created not to make people more comfortable but to dry ink during publishing.
- Originally AC strengths were measured in “ice power” by the number of blocks of ice used to keep the temperature cool.
