Deciding whether to repair or replace an older air conditioning unit can be a tough call. We are here to try and make that decision and little more clear and concise. While we realize it can come down to cost, sometimes tossing more money at an old unit simply isn’t the budget wise choice.
When to replace:
If your AC unit is more than 15 years old it might just be time to let it go. Though these units are built to last 15 to even 20 years, after that 15-year mark they do begin to breakdown due to normal wear and tear.
Follow the 50/50 Rule – If the cost expense is more than 50% of the value of the air conditioning unit, it is likely going to need more repairs in the future and it would be more cost effective to get a new unit.
Your energy bills are through the roof – if you notice the rate hasn’t gone up, yet your bill is suddenly jumping in cost it could be an old ineffective AC at fault. Older units simply aren’t rated as well for energy efficiency and over time they do lose efficiency.
During a remodel – AC units are not one size fits all. Depending on the remodeling you are undergoing, your old unit may not fit in the new space. For instance, many older models were in ceiling mounted. That has given way to closet sized models which are easier to reach, clean, do maintenance on and change the filters. Additionally, if you are adding square footage to your home, you may need a larger unit.
When to repair:
When it’s something minor or something inexpensive. Following the 50/50 rule above holds true here. If the repair cost is less than half of the units original cost, and it is a newer unit, it may be better for you to simply do the recommended repair.
