While it is always better to let the professionals handle AC maintenance, it is always beneficial to understand how things work.
Air Conditioner Filters
Dirty filters clog normal air flow and reduce efficiency significantly. With normal air flow obstructed, air that bypasses the filter may carry dirt directly into the evaporator coil and impair the coil’s heat-absorbing capacity. Keeping the filter clean can lower your air conditioner’s energy consumption by 5%–15%.
Air Conditioner Coils
The air conditioner’s evaporator coil and condenser coil collect dirt over their months and years of service. This dirt reduces air flow and insulates the coil. It reduces the ability to absorb heat. Check your evaporator coil every yearly.
The Coil Fins
The aluminum fins on evaporator and condenser coils are easily bent and can block airflow through the coil.
Pans and Drain lines
Algae can form naturally when they have the right conditions such as adequate nutrients such as light levels, pH, and temperature. Cleaning out the pan and the drain lines yearly is key.
Outdoor condenser coils
Try to minimize dirt and debris near the condenser unit. Leaves, pollen, grass, and branches are all potential sources of coil blocking dirt and rubbish. Cleaning the area around the coil, removing any debris, and trimming foliage back to allow air flow around the condenser.
